The movie isn’t anything special, but it is VERY Dark Souls at times, in terms of the look and atmosphere. While it was slightly disappointing as a movie, it still had a lot of Soulsian imagery. The best dark medieval fantasy in ages.įrom what I remember, it’s very Bloodborne.īeen a while since I watched it, but from what I remember it is VERY Soulsian / Bloodbornian - possibly the most so on this list. Give it a chance, it’s actually really good. Nails the whole derelict fantasy city vibe. Basically a series of (kickass) boss battles.Īgain with the 80s. It’s basically Dark Souls, but Japanese, and with ninjas instead of knights. No, really! Despite the silliness, there is a lot of Soulsian imagery and tone here. There’s enough dark medieval fantasy imagery here for it to be worth checking out as a Souls fan. Grim, dark, medieval, knights, atmospheric, badass. Not too bad, and has a slightly different take on it. More obscure, older version, in animated form. This one’s obvious and you’ve probably already seen them. Just bear with it for the first 5-10 minutes. It’s got everything but a sword wielding knight protagonist. Again, it’s all about the 80s – smoke machines, puppets, imaginative creatures and environments. Has a lot of really awesome, imaginative creature design.įuck yes. While it’s not medieval, its aesthetically very Dark Souls. Not a lot of explicit crossover appeal, but there is enough in there to make you say ‘huh, that’s kinda Dark Soulsy’. Def worth seeing.īombastic, preposterous… but you know - swords, magic. But its dripping with atmosphere and tone. I didn’t expect a 20’s movie to be on this list either. Yes, it can be campy and goofy, but it’s still got all that classic medieval fantasy imagery, plus great music.
All about fighting giant monsters with swords.Ī classic. Surprisingly decent (don’t bother with the sequel though). I kind of hated the movie, but it’s one of the few films that are thoroughly dark gothic fantasy horror.
